Quite a bit of Show and Tell... our 2nd Half Square Triangle Exchange month... fun!

DON'T FORGET: Our May group meeting is a week early because of Memorial Day - May 18th! (Hey, isn't that Mt. St. Helens Day?)

Our Verse from Linda - or really from God :-)

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Group Projects

Barb is going to Astorga Spain to teach quilting with Cathy Crawford. They're doing a hexi project, and Barb would like our help - providing fun fabric, and making kits. We'll do a Friendship Quilting Day project either in May 16 or June 13, and I'll let you know what you can bring when we get more details!

Also, we discussed our next Global Outreach Partner (missionary) quilt project, and decided we should do one for Dan & Teresa Heath to celebrate with them their completion of the New Testament translation. We'll decide a pattern/block we can all work on, and present it at next group.

Show and Tell

One of our Show and Tell items were some cute pillows made by Eunice with VW Beetle design. She's been so kind to write up directions and share them with us! Beetle Pillow Pattern She's also got an Etsy shop - Rain City Sews. Check it out!

And kicked off the HST Exchange! Everyone there got instructions for the exchange and at least 4 sheets to make - which I know a bunch of you have already burned through! :-) Nice!

Edyta Sitar has a wonderful video about doing triangle exchanges, and there are so many things you can do with triangles! We'll make some each month, exchange them with each other, and come up with marvelous designs! We passed around this document with lots of HST ideas! Next meeting (February 23rd) we'll hand out directions, and papers we'll print in house, so we're all working with the same thing! (Not Edyta's - they're too expensive.)

Our meeting was fun and filled with excitement for the upcoming Superbowl - too bad it didn't turn out like we wanted. :-( But Terry inspired us all with a quilt she made for her physical therapist - hopefully quilting it doesn't send her back to the therapist! It was almost done at group, and she sent a pic of it done! Nice work - and way to improvise!

Linda shared a verse: John 10:10 (which we usually only quote the last half) "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have live and have it abundantly." Good reminder to be aware of what the thief is up to!

NEXT QUILT GROUP: Our next meeting will be a salad or dessert potluck & "stash clean out sale" at Rainbow Lodge in North Bend where Linda & Tim live/manage. Here are the directions from their website:

Comfort Quilts

- There is a clothing drop bin outside our Quilt Room door for Hearts and Home - a Christian thrift store in Bellevue.

- Baby quilt status - We've got a dedication coming up soon. Debbie has several quilts, and we added more to the stash tonight!

Missionary Quilts

We discussed the status of the Ziska's quilt. Also whether they all need to be made "together" or if individuals could make a quilt and we pray for it and send it on it's way. The only disadvantage to an individual making it is that we don't have the prayer time with it (I like to pray as I make blocks for the quilt). If we knew someone was working on one, we could "draw" the next missionary name and be praying while it's being made elsewhere!

Friendship Quilting Day will be 4/12 - and we'll work on their quilt that day. I've got a bunch of blocks cut out... just need assembled.

We also discussed keeping on making the Sugar Cubes blocks (like we're making for the Ziskas), but also, making nine patches out of 2.5" pieces as you have time or have squares. We'll have a nine-patch quilt in no time if we all make one a day! The block is made of 2.5" pieces... ending up measuring 6.5" - which comes out to 6" when finished. Have fun!

Quilts for Oso

Layers of Hope Quilting 911 is coordinating quilts to take to Oso victim families and to Responders. They need the first batch by April 19th. One of the drop points is in Burien at a knitting store (they take knitting and crocheting too), which I'm willing to deliver to. Just get me anything you may have very soon! We decided to send the blue and yellow string quilt? I'm going to send my Hawaiian. Kathy offered her pea pod kids' quilt. Their info is at: Layersofhopequilting911.blogspot.com I imagine with the good response they've had so far, that they'll need to make a second delivery.

Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you

with all joy and peace as you trust in Him,

so that you may overflow with hope

by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We brought in our blocks for the Ziska quilt. We have 20 blocks so far. We decided that 6x8 was too small, so for the sake of the pattern we're going to make it 8x10 - bring your blocks to the March group meeting! Here's the general idea:

Friendship Quilting Day was voted on for March, and officially moved to March 15th (instead of March 8th), which is totally appropriate, as March 15th is National Quilting Day!!

Val showed us how to do a quick pair of 9-patches! Don't know if I can type it up here... but it was quick and easy! Made 2 blocks... one with the darks on the outside, and one with them on the inside.

2014 UFO Challenge!

Several of us are going to choose 10 unfinished quilts that we'd like to get done this year. We've chosen and numbered them 1-10, and every month we'll draw a number and work on that numbered UFO! "Finished" means whatever you'd like it to mean. It can mean completely done and labeled, or work on one Block of the Month per month that you're behind on... or really anything goes! Not really just a bunch of rules... just trying to motivate each other and cheer each other on! Our number to work on this month:

2!

You can do it!

Quilting was fun last Monday! A few things we discussed and show and tell here!

Friendship Quilting Day Changing to Baby Quilting Day

We've changed the date of February's Friendship Quilting Day to February 15th, and the purpose for the day as well! We are completely out of baby quilts now, so we thought it'd be smart to have a Baby Quilting Day, in lieu of our original plan. Let's do some getting ahead of the game again. Please come February 15th (9-4 or whatever time you can) - even if you don't have time to sew, maybe someone could use help with pressing!

I offered an idea of a quilt I made - here's a link to the pattern for Oh Fransson's Baby Charm quilt. (Please print your own copy - apparently that's the owners' rule.) It uses primarily charm squares and a background fabric, which I've seen as white, dark brown, and I made one with blue plaid as the background. The picture is one I made - I didn't have charm squares... just cut some fabric squares.

You don't have to use this pattern that day (or if you have other pressing projects, you're certainly welcome to work on them that day too). We have another pattern called Snuggle Up that we use often for baby quilts and makes a cute one. Here's the pattern link to Snuggle Up.
We're going to make this block for Joe and Brenda Zyska's quilt. The directions are in the link above. Any color goes. The really main important thing is that the lights go diagonally through your block! That what makes the pattern work. Please bring what you have done to our February group meeting and we asses what we have so far. Then we will bring them in April, and assemble them in May.
You can start making them now if you want (from 2 1/2" strips). But at next group meeting Val is going to show us a quick way to make 2 at a time!

UFO List

And one last thing. Diana and I decided we liked the motivation of having a UFO (UnFinished Object) list to help us get things done. We're going to make a list of 10 unfinished quilts (not all of them, so our list isn't so overwhelming), and draw a number each month to pick the one we're going to work on. If you'd like to play along, bring a list to the February meeting and we'll get started!

Show and Tell

Whew! That's a lot! And here's a link to the Show and Tell for the month:
I know I've been delinquent posting our group notes lately. We had a lot of fun Monday night, and I wanted to recap, as we talked about several things. (Sorry this kind of turned into a novelette.)

Upcoming dates:

December 14 - Possible Friendship Quilting Day (or getting done with Christmas Projects day)
No December Group meeting
January 11 - Friendship Quilting Day
January 16-19 - Seabeck Quilt Retreat - I need to turn in our names very soon (like the middle of December), so if you want to come to retreat, please let me know!!
January 27 - Quilt Group Meeting (wow that sounds so far away!)
February 8 - Pillowcase Making Frenzy Friendship Quilting Day

Missionary Quilts

Back in October we talked about doing some "quilts for others." The idea was put out there (thanks Sherri) that it would be nice to make quilts for our missionaries (aka Global Outreach Partners). This would be something that we would all make blocks for and put together as a group for the most part. Maybe one quilt a quarter? Also, we could make a point of praying for them during the time we're making the quilt, holding them up especially during that time. It will be harder to deliver some, depending on where they are and what their mail system is like, but we'll work that out with our Global Outreach department.

Anyway, I talked to the Global Outreach Director (aka Jack Fender, aka Dad), and he thought this would be a really cool idea!

I wasn't really sure how we decide what order to make quilts in, but Jack/Dad suggested that the Joe & Brenda Ziska could really use some encouragement at the moment, as Joe is battling cancer (still or again?). The group agreed. At the January 27 group meeting, we'll have a plan of a quilt to make (actually I have an idea), and then we'll all get busy! In the mean time, let's pray for them (and you can friend them on Facebook if you'd like). This is so exciting!

Baby Quilts

OK. So most of you know the baby quilt <strike>saga</strike> <strike>story</strike> info now. A few things have come up to stir the pot on Baby Dedication Quilts:

We've had some quilts returned in the past year because the parents wanted something different (something to match their nursery, no blue butterflies on a boy quilt, etc.).

Some parents have asked to not get quilts. I, of course, jumped to the conclusion that they are just ungrateful, but that is NOT (always) the case. One family has received several quilts already, and I think felt guilty getting another, as they understand that a lot goes into it. Some have quilter grandmas in their family that make lovely dedication quilts for them already. :-)

Baby Dedication has changed a little:

Parents are required to go to a one-time baby dedication class, explaining what it's all about, and they can choose at that time whether or not they want a quilt.

They are doing the dedications in groups on stage, rather than one baby at a time. I believe this is just due to the larger number of babies lately, and the short time allotted during Sunday services.

Because of the group dedication, and because some families may not choose to receive a quilt, the quilts are handed out "back stage" before or after the dedication.

We've been getting a really short notice time on larger numbers of quilts needed, so Debbie is having a harder time getting them done in time, and because she lives so far away, getting them to church in time. She has to work fairly hard to make that all happen in time.

OK. So at the October group meeting, we discussed whether or not we wanted to keep doing the quilts for the Baby Dedications. Perhaps we should turn our focus to babies that really "need" a quilt, rather than people who may or may not appreciate them? Linda contacted a couple of groups that would definitely appreciate quilts (Carenet, which CBC supports, and PICC, that previous CBC people have worked with).

But I needed to tell Paulette what we wanted to do, as she is the Director responsible for this ministry. She answers to Jerry, who loves the baby quilts, and we talked to him together. Jerry was not aware of most of what was happening above (dedications are now under Derek's jurisdiction), and understood our frustration. He has, however, heard wonderful things about the quilts - how people cherish them... put them with their bronzed baby booties to give them to the child one day, etc. He felt that we didn't hear the positive things often... just unfortunately the negative ones.

Jerry asked us to keep doing them for 6 more months, and we'd carefully track how many families want vs. don't want a quilt, what the turnaround time is like, etc. I couldn't really argue with that! :-) So, we'll keep going for now, and reevaluate next year some time.

Pillowcases

In all the discussions about doing quilts for others, we talked about how some quilts we make aren't really baby sized or baby appropriate. We talked about an outlet for quilts for teens or adults. Linda works with a woman who works at a recovery center in Kent for girls who have been rescued from the sex slave trade. They like to give the girls (ages 13-20) quilts, but also pillowcases.

We love the "tube" pillowcase method, and how fast they get made, so we thought we'd dedicate February 8th's Friendship Quilting Day

Lorraine's 60th!

We had a great time celebrating Lorraine's 60th birthday, and surprising her with the wonderful quilt that Nan made (with a little help from her quilty friends), and Kathy quilted! She was totally surprised... and surprised us all by picking out which block the majority of us made!
We had a small but fun group for our June meeting!

One of the important dates coming up is the July Group Meeting, July 29th ... which will be at Melanie Adent's house - a Quilty Garage Sale! A chance to maybe move along some of your fabric or projects you're not so excited about any more, and see get excited about new-to-you items! Bring appetizers to share (easy to walk around with), and lots of one dollar bills! :-) We'll get more details together shortly, and I'll email you all her address.BetsyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07627109063843339268noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7200937892576711635.post-357834204531190522013-06-10T09:18:00.001-07:002013-06-10T09:18:39.690-07:00May 2013<div style="padding: 0;
The baby dedication process is changing. The church is considering having a class for the parents as part of the dedication process. The date for the next baby dedication has not been set and we don't know how many quilts we will need. Debbie will keep us posted. Keep them coming and we'll be ready when the next rush hits!

Betsy shared a devotional from a book "Jesus Calling"

We are considering having another retreat in June. Let Betsy know if you'd be interested. We do have a retreat set for October 3-6 - let her know if you'd like to go to that one too!

Gossypium; The new quilt shop in Issaquah is open. Val Davis reported she will be teaching beginning quilting at the shop. Mo Newman (former coordinator of Companionship Quilters) is also teaching there, and coordinating teachers.

Diana showed a antique quilt made by her grandmother that she is planning on repairing. Sounds like her grandmother made quite a few of these. Well loved and well used - just what a quilt should be. Click on the pic to see it larger.

Many of us are working on the Craftsy Block of the Month, and brought the latest blocks to share. We watched the video for Month #4 which are two blocks that incorporate hexagons.

We had fun at Quilt Group last Monday! I was especially surprised - a 50th Birthday celebration! Totally surprised. What a sweet group! About 6:25 I was totally wondering where everyone was... why no one had come yet! Terry came in and informed me that traffic was especially stinky, and that must be why everyone was late. You guys are too funny.

A couple of you made wonderful cupcakes for the occasion! (Good think I ran out of time to make the cake I was thinking about!) And I am so thankful for the lovely gifts! I feel so special!
On Craftsy.com there is a supply list. She suggests a number of fat quarters and background fabric, but you certainly could make it out of scraps and/or stash. Black or some other color would be a cool background... whatever you like! Here's an abbreviated list. I wouldn't run out and buy anything until you need it... and we'll have lots of these items that we can share among the group... like fabric markers or large rulers:

Background fabric – 4 yards (3.75 m) will give you enough for background, sashing and border.

Binding fabric of your choice – 1⁄2 yard

Backing fabric of your choice – 41⁄2 yards

Batting - The quilt is 55" x 68 1⁄2" If you buy batting prepackaged by bed size, in most brands, this is a twin. Off a 96"roll, you’ll need 2 yards.

35 fat quarters (FQ) in a variety of prints and colors – I’m working with a 35-print bundle, but

I’ll probably have a few unused fat quarters at the end, of prints I chose not to incorporate. You may not need 35 exactly; it really depends on which fabrics you choose for which blocks, as it’s a very scrappy quilt. I’m not sure I’d go out and purchase 35 individual FQs, but if you’re buying a bundle, a 36-print one will be perfect.

Thread

Rotary cutter and mat

Fabric scissors

4 1⁄2" square ruler for half square triangles

Fabric glue stick

Templates (optional, see patterns)

Baby Dedications
Debbie has let us know now that there's a couple of month reprieve on baby quilts, but that usually creates a busy spell shortly after... October could be busy! And we are really low on boy and girl quilts... so don't stop now! I think the consensus is to have our Friendship Quilting Day which is on September 8th be a baby quilting day. It's also Debbie's birthday... how appropriate!

Lorraine would like to make a quilt for Ruth-Anne Heath, and would accept any jewel tone batik donations that you might have!

If you have any items you don't need (particularly fabric that others could use for our Fall Block of the Month program), please bring it to our August meeting!

We primarily ate dinner, and revealed our pizza box square quilts! 19 of the 20 Exchange participants were able to make it! That's amazing!
Verses from Linda:

"Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:2

"Deep lasting change requires me to attend to how this present age impacts my thinking." ~ from Christ Formed in You by Brian G Hedges

"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worth of praise." Philippians 4:8

We had 3 new visitors! Judy Kreft and her sister-in-law Ilene came. Judy has come to Crossroads a few times, and Ilene is an amazing hand piecer, quilter, and appliquer from Hawaii. Also visiting was Tricia Curtis. She's been sewing since she was young, but is just learning to quilt, and has a quilt under way already!

We voted to keep meeting through the summer, even if the meetings are small.
