CQ Profiles

A chance to get to know more about each other! These interviews were done by Mo Shepard. It's so fun to learn a little about people and their different quilting styles!

Mo Shepard - Interviewed November 2002
Husband: Keith
Children: Becky (24), Andrew (18), Tim (15)
Years married: 21 years on August 8th
Birthday: September 13th

How long have you had the quilting virus? Since early in 1980 (why does that seem so long ago?)

Which is your favorite quilting store and why? Pieces, in Renton, because I can almost get inspired by their sample quilts. Also, they have kits, and I love kits!

Share a quilt tip: When choosing fabrics for your quilt, add at least one strong contrasting piece (a zinger), if only one, to add interest (and sometimes confusion). Helps to sidestep a boring quilt.

Best time of the day to quilt: While the kids are in school, but I have to put time limits on myself or I forget that I have a family to feed for dinner.

Quilting goal for this year? To not start any new quilts, except the retreat quilt. To actually finish the Wildberry Vines top.

Favorite quilting activity: Retreat, because I enjoy so much the days and nights of continuous sewing and friendship.

Favorite Block: An old one, with several names: Brown Goose, Devil's claw, Old Maid. I don't like any of the names, but I really love that block!

Favorite Fabric Collections: Civil War reproductions, Turn-of-the-Century reproductions and Thirties.

Favorite Color: Really enjoy greens, rusts, and those dark reproductions.

Other Hobbies: I love reading; I don't love all the exercises and cardio, but it's taking up a lot of my time these days.

May we pray for you? That I honor God as a wife and mother to the family He has given me.

Paulette Gledhill - Interviewed July 2002
Husband: Gary
Children: Ryan (26), Brook (24, married to Jeff), Megan (21)
Years married: 29 1/2, already planning 30th anniversary
Birthday: December 27th

How long have you had the quilting virus? A little over five years.

Which is your favorite quilting store and why? Sisters in Chehalis because of their selection of fabric and how comfortable they make me feel when I walk in the door.

Share a quilt tip: Square everything! You just have to do it!

Best time of the day to quilt: Evenings, during a Mariners game, and I can sew guilt-free.

Quilting goal for this year? To do less, to balance my free time with rest.

Favorite quilting activity: Retreat!

Favorite Block: Dresden Plate, Baskets, Pinwheels

Favorite Fabric Collections: Thirties

Favorite Color: Oh, I love them all, but maybe red. I've always liked red, but I've never been brave enough to put it in my house; although, I'm beginning to see it here and there. Oh, I don't know. I also like green, but not red and green together - that's Christmas. Oh, I just like them all!

Other Hobbies: I love reading, growing flowers, and nesting my home.

May we pray for you? Balance. One of these days I'll get that down.

Betsy Ercolini - Interviewed March 2002
Husband: Steve
Children: Packer (dog); Sigmund (cat)
Years married: 9
Birthday: September 10th

How long have you had the quilting virus? Since Ladies Retreat 1996. I was in Mo's small group and heard her talking about quilting, I guess. I happened to talk to Mom about it, who happened to mention that she had some old quilt tops from my grandmother and great-grandmother. I mentioned that to Mo and she said, "why don't you come to quilt group and bring them with you?" It was pretty much all downhill from there!

Which is your favorite quilting store and why? Center Diamond in Cannon Beach, because it's so pleasant. I love the feel-good atmosphere. Also Greenbaum's Quilted Forrest in Salem, Oregon. They have lots of fun stuff and samples on the wall.

Share a quilt tip: I really like the grippy gloves for machine quilting.

Best time of the day to quilt: Early in the morning if I happen to be up (which I'm usually not), or very late at night when I should be going to bed.

Quilting goal for this year? To finish projects and especially not start anything new.

Favorite quilting activity: Retreat! Because I'm getting something done and having a good time doing it.

Other Hobbies: Scrapbooking, and collecting antique kitchen things.

May we pray for you? To get more involved in church and getting to know more people.

Holly Campbell - Interviewed September 2001
Husband: Val
Children: Griffin (22), Sean (20), Adrian (18)
Years married: 24 years on Sept 10th
Birthday: August 28th

How long have you had the quilting virus? Mmmm, as long as I can remember. It's been 15-18 years. I used to quilt with my girlfriend at beach retreats while our kids played in the sand.

Which is your favorite quilt store and why? In the  Beginning!!! I just love their fabrics and it's a real treat to go up there; it's a special trip and I love it!

Share a quilt tip: Be sure to plan ahead and always get the right amount of fabric you will need to complete your quilt, especially thinking of the back and binding.

Best time of the day to quilt: Evenings/nights, because everybody else is doing their own thing and this is my time!

Quilting goal for this year? To practice machine quilting so I can finish a couple of tops.

Favorite quilting activity: I can't wait to go to retreat! I am very excited and it will be really fun to get away.

Other Hobbies: I run...no, plod, but fairly consistently. I love cooking and recipes, surfing the net for quilt and recipe sites.

May we pray for you Holly? For peace in my job and that it would be according to God's will.

Lori Payne - Interviewed August 2001
Husband: Tom
Children: Kenny (10) and Matthew (8)
Years married: 12
Birthday: March 20th

How long have you had the quilting virus? Oh, 13-14 years, with breaks.

Which is your favorite quilting store and why? Quiltworks, because it's convenient and I like their service. They give lots of advice and even helped me figure yardage for the block of the month.

Share a quilt tip: Ask when you need help, from an experienced quilter, or you'll pay the price by reverse sewing.

Best time of the day to quilt: I do my machine work in the afternoon and hand-quilt in the evening. It's my excuse to watch TV with the kids.

Quilting goal for this year? To get the jar quilts for my kinds on their wall and and finish the group house top.

Favorite quilting activity: Retreats, because of the chance to really get to know other ladies in the group, AND, I get so much done!

Other Hobbies: Love to ski in the winter, and spend summer by the pool or lake; enjoy the summer heat in Wenatchee or Chelan. Reading all year round, and bible study.

May we pray for you Lori? Good management of  time because I work and Tom is not home evenings, and I try to get everything done in the evenings, kids and all.

Husband: Richard (Dick)
Children: 2 daughters (44 and 45)
Years married: 48 years this summer

How long have you had the quilting virus? About 10 years. I started with my mother's friendship quilt blocks from 1924. I researched in the library how to do the blocks.

Share a quilt tip: Learn to use your thimble. It may feel clumsy when first starting out, but persevere! Use Thread Heaven to keep thread from knotting.

Best time of the day to quilt: Whenever I have 15 or 20 minutes to sit down and do it!

Quilting goal for this year? To finish my whole cloth, queen-sized quilt. The pattern is Queen Anne Star.

Favorite quilting activity: Sisters! (Quilt show in Oregon)

Other Hobbies: Gardening, sewing garments, alterations.

May we pray for you Norma? Dick's health and not overdoing with his back.

Husband: Pastor Tim
Children: 3 and 1 daughter-in-law (ages 26, 25, 18)
Years married: 30 this August
Birthday: October 5th

How long have you had the quilting virus? Officially 3 years, but I had the bug earlier. I thought I couldn't afford it.

Which are your 2 favorite quilt stores? Quilting with Ease in Everett because it's in an old house and you can find fabric everywhere, even in closets; and Harbor Quilts in Gig Harbor because the ladies are soooo nice and they have a great selection.

Share a quilt tip: Enjoy what you're doing: don't do something because you have to. Put together the colors you like and don't worry about the rules.

Best time of the day to quilt: Evening, because during the day I feel I should be doing other things.

Quilting goal for this year? To keep finishing what I start.

Favorite quilting activity: Retreat, definitely!

Other Hobbies: Reading (no time for anything else).
